Package the freight carefully. Once it is loaded on a freight truck all further handling will be done with a forklift or tow motor. Once the package is inside the system of a particular freight carrier, it will not usually be handled except by mechanical means. That means it will be taken off one truck and pushed onto another five to ten times during its trip. Packaging needs to be done with this in mind. Freight should be on a pallet and not extend past the edges of the pallet. Any thing hanging over will get crushed or at the very least scratched badly. Check with individual freight companies, but most carriers charge one price for standard (42inches by 48inches) palletized freight weighing less than 500 pounds. This means you do not need to struggle with getting an exact weight for these packages under 500 pounds. Specify if the pick up or delivery is to a noncommercial location when getting quotes. There will be an extra charge for noncommercial delivery, typically 50 to 100 dollars or more. This can be avoided by dropping the freight off or picking it up at the terminal of the trucking company. Attach a packing slip or at least an address tag to the freight. A simple hand written piece of paper taped to the side of freight will do. Do not tape it to the top; it can not be read if it is stacked. The tag needs to have the name, address and telephone number for the shipper and receiver. Just a tag that says to and from attached to the side of the freight can save a lot of headaches if the regular labeling gets ripped off. Some shippers attach this information to all four sides of the freight. Shipping hazardous materials requires special care. If you do not ship on a regular basis, ask the freight company for help with any hazardous goods you wish to ship. Hazardous goods are usually obvious things such as gas, paint, oxygen, human tissue or urine. Some things are hazardous goods as far as shipping is concerned and are not obvious. Things like cleaners, hairspray, spray cheese, batteries or tons of liquid products are hazardous when shipping. Basically, if it is liquid or compressed check with the freight company to be sure before shipping it. Paperwork needs to be done and have a copy to attach to the freight and a copy to keep. The exact contents of the freight need to be included as a packing slip in the paperwork; this provides all parties concerned with a record of what was physically sent in the freight. If the freight goes to a business expect the packing slip to be checked against the freight contents and signed off on when it arrives. The freight shipping routine schedule for most truck freight carriers is to deliver in the morning and pick up in the afternoon. If your freight is to be picked up, most of the time it will be between 3 and 5 pm. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is best to call for a pick up after the packaging is done and the freight is ready. Shipping freight with a national carrier is not difficult. These seven tips are from experience shipping commercial and private freight. They are things that can cause headaches if their not expected. Most carriers will answer all of your shipping questions and help you in any way they can. |
