Candyce Maglio's blog ::Freight Car Friday – Make a Tarped Load for Your Gondolas and Flatcars
As I start to create holiday traditions for my own family, I can't help but reminisce about my own childhood memories of holiday light shows and Christmas caroling. When I was a child these activities were separate events like watching the light show at Wanamaker's Department store or listening to carolers go from house to house in my neighborhood spreading the joy of Christmas. In the Brandywine Valley, one can enjoy all of these activities and more in the course of one evening. Brandywine residents and visitors alike are well aware of Kennett Square's Longwood Gardens for its beauty. However, if you have only been to Longwood during the warmer months you are truly missing out. Longwood Gardens' Holiday Wonderland celebration, which runs through January, is known for its spectacular Christmas trees, fountain light show, light displays and holiday-themed gardens as well as its musical performances. As you are captivated by the beauty of the former DuPont Mansion, an assortment of performances from professionals as well as students from local high schools and universities provides guests with entertainment throughout their visit. While there is something for everyone at Longwood, children will especially enjoy Breakfast with Santa as well as a miniature Christmas Railway featuring Thomas the Train. If you are looking for something a little more traditional, perhaps a Victorian Christmas at Winterthur is more up your alley. Just minutes away from Longwood Gardens, the former childhood home of Henry Francis du Pont was opened to the public 60 years ago as museum, library and gardens. Its Yuletide Celebration allows visitors to experience the traditions of the past under the backdrop of dazzling holiday displays. There are a variety of special events, performances, and workshops for you and your family including a Yuletide Diner, Cooking Demonstrations and Floral Design Workshops. This year, vignettes featuring mid-1800s Christmas celebrations and the January 1938 wedding festivities of Pauline Louise du Pont will also be showcased. In addition, a variety of concerts will take place throughout the month of December. Rich in Art, History and Victorian tradition, the Brandywine River Museum at Christmas time is a must. Visitors to the museum can gaze at the fabulous displays including an elaborate Victorian dollhouse as well as thousands of whimsical "critter" ornaments on holiday trees. Children young and old will especially enjoy the extensive O-gauge model railroad featuring mostly Lionel products from 1915 to present. The display contains 150 locomotives, 300 freight cars, and 2,000 feet of track. The museum also has an extensive gift shop containing books, calendars and other items highlighting Wyeth family art. If you are looking for some holiday spirits, you should check out the various vineyards along the Brandywine Wine Trail. Chaddsford Winery, a Brandywine favorite, hosts its Holiday Open Houses featuring mulled wines and holiday carolers along with an assortment of holiday treats. They have waived their tasting fees too. Another winery worth a visit is Penns Wood, also located in Chaddsford. They have an event called Mulled Wine Weekends where they serve two spiced mulled wines in addition to their normal wine tastings. Former Brandywine Trail member and Avondale staple Va La Vineyards also has extended holiday hours. South of Longwood Gardens, the Vineyard offers fabulous wines and local Brandywine Valley delicacies in addition to the local art displays. After visiting all the Brandywine has to offer, it's hard not to work up an appetite. While you could catch a bite to eat at Longwood, there are many notable restaurants in the area worth trying. One of the best known secrets is Buckley's Tavern. The local road side favorite has a diverse menu of tasty offerings in their restaurant. The Cheese head Mac and Cheese made with aged cheddar, brie and gruyere cheeses is a new twist on a familiar favorite. Their wings, from the bar menu, are highly recommended. Buckley's also has an extensive wine and beer menu. Other taverns to consider are Duffers and the Chaddsford Tavern. Although there are no shortages of great places to eat in the Brandywine Valley a few noteworthy places are The Gables, Dilworthtown Inn and Blue Pear Bistro. For affordable comfort foods, Hank's Place often draws a crowd especially for breakfast. If Asian Cuisine is more your thing Ming Village, Sweet Basil Thai and Masamoto Sushi are all excellent choices. Just up the road a piece, a great place for BBQ is Bull Durham's Texas BBQ and Steakhouse. I haven't found anything on their menu that was a hit with the family. If you are looking for a little holiday magic or to create lasting holiday memories, a trip to the Brandywine Valley is in order. From spectacular light shows to holiday spirits. From history to fine dining the Brandywine is sure to bring joy to everyone in your entire family. |
